Marcus

Dr. Marcus is Program Leader for Cancer Prevention and Control at the University of Colorado Cancer Center (UCCC).  He also directs a NCI-funded Survey Research Resource Core at UCCC. Dr. Marcus established this core resource in 1993, which became a NCI-funded core resource in 2000. Specializing in computer-assisted telephone interviewing, this resource has completed in excess of 100,000 telephone interviews, the vast majority of which were funded by the NCI, CDC and ACS. Dr. Marcus has also been involved in behavioral research in cancer prevention and control for over 30 years.  His research interests span the full spectrum of cancer prevention and control, from primary and secondary prevention to cancer survivorship.  Most recently, Dr. Marcus has led a research team that successfully tested in three large randomized trials tailored print interventions to promote healthy diet and nutrition practices, colorectal cancer screening and smoking cessation.  He also recently reported the results from a large randomized trial that successfully tested a psychosocial telephone counseling program for breast cancer survivors.  He has been Principal Investigator of two previous program project grants (P01) conducted in collaboration with the NCI-funded Cancer Information Service (i.e., the Cancer Information Service Research Consortium), which is now being carried forward in a third P01 (2006-2011). The current CISRC is conducting three large trials to test web-based interventions to promote informed treatment decision making (prostate and breast cancer patients) and to help breast cancer survivors prepare for life after primary therapy.
